Update 3: November 4, 2019
Overview: Week 3
There's been a somber mood amongst GEAS volunteers this week, after we learned about the disappearance of one of our Superthreat guides, Melissa Richards, otherwise known as noplacelikehome. We're still not sure what has happened to her, and we are praying for her safe return. Ironically, this news came just as we were celebrating Audrey's homecoming, after her release from prison.
This turn of events reminds us that we cannot let our guard down, not even for a moment. As nomads and refugees, we face many dangers in our day-to-day lives, in addition to trying to make headway against the Superthreats. I applaud each and every one of you who is making the extra effort to defeat these threats!
Given that we are a little short-handed, I'm going roll the GenExile news portion of Week 3 into the Week 4 update and go right into ways that we can increase our survival horizon.
Increase Our Survival Horizon by Winning Badges and Inviting New SEHIs
According to the Global Extinction Awareness System (GEAS) survival horizon algorithm, there are two tools that we have at our disposal, to increase our Survivability Score, and thus extend our survival horizon:
Increase the total number of SEHIs
Every new Survival Profile adds a point to our SEHI score! Think about people you know or work with, who might be able to contribute to a particular Superstruct...
Earn Survivability Badges.
If YOU earn all 10 survivability badges, you'll add 100 points to our collective score. You'll be personally responsible for adding 5.2 weeks to humanity's survival horizon. Talk about making a difference! Each badge earns points for your personal score AND the overall survivability score (Check out the badge descriptions).
You can earn badges by simply by creating new Stories, Discussions and Superstructs. The best ones will earn badges! GEAS volunteers are always on the lookout for badge-worthy content, but we can't catch everything! If you see something really great, nominate it, using the link in the upper-right hand corner. If you think someone deserves a particular badge, but their submissions have already won other badges, you can nominate them directly by looking up their name in the SEHI directory, clicking through to their profile, and using the "nominate for a badge" link.
Now....if you are sitting there thinking, "Gosh, I think my latest Superstructure/Story/Discussion really deserved a badge, but no one nominated me", fret not. Just go ahead and nominate yourself! (Don't worry, it's totally legitimate. Heck, we even encourage it! Just, you know, make sure it is truly badge-worthy.)
Now....let's talk about a few ways to earn badges...
Influency Badge Mission: Recruit a Super-SEHI!
In honor of noplacelikehome, I'm assigning you guys a mission that she came up with. Recruit someone with a lot of influence in the real world to become a SEHI and earn your Influency Badge. This person can be a politician, news reporter, super-blogger, major or minor celebrity, a well-known scientist or a sports figure. It could even be your favorite professor at school. Just tell me why you think they are influential and get them to complete their profile! What you need to do is recruit the person and then nominate yourself for the badge after they complete their profile. Be sure to include the new SEHI's Superstruct name in the description (You can also private message me with a request for the badge).
Signal/Noise Management Badge Mission: Declare Your Top Three Superstructs
GEAS has declared that we are minimizing our effectiveness by going to wide! We need to combine superstructs into bigger, more effective structures. Earn your Signal/Noise Management Badge by declaring your top three Superstructs.
(Remember: we will make every effort to track contributions, but if you contributed and feel you did not receive a badge you deserved, don't hesitate to nominate yourself for one, using the link on your profile!)
Collaboration Mission: Brain Blast!
Now that you have named your top 3 Superstructures, it's time to supercharge them! The Superthreat guides got together and came up with a way that we can fast-forward our Superstructs and really bring them to the next level, a "Brain Blast". What we need are short bursts of focused energy. We are asking each SEHI to choose 3 of their favorite Superstructs, and add something to each one. The idea is to find ways that you can connect the Superstructs to your existing communities. We want you to answer the questions, “How can *I* uniquely contribute?” and “How can my group or network uniquely contribute?”
The following are some Superstructs which are promising candidates for Brain Blasts:
1. Lead Vehicles:
These Superstructs are our heavy-hitters, and some have been around from the very beginning. They have a large membership, and have earned badges. Let's make these even stronger and see when they can go!
* The New Pony Express Mail Relay Experiment
* Nomadic Markup Language (NoChalking)
* Homestead-in-a-Box
* Portable Energy
* The Emergency Permaculture Kit
* Gypsy Farms
* DEN (the Distributed Educational Network)
* Extended Family
* CRADLE 2 CRADLE
2. New to the Tribe:
These are relatively new ideas, but they seem to contain potential to be extremely important, overarching superstructures in the long run.
* The Trust Market
* Polycentric Law
* The Venn MotherStruct
* The Global Village
* The Promised Land
* Migrant Community Hub Project
3. Stragglers
These Superstructs are the "diamonds in the rough" of Generation Exile. These are new and innovative ideas which, for one reason or another, they have not received much attention. These are the efforts that we think merit further exploration.
* Rook Parliament
* HexaYurt Project
* The Esoteric Pony Express
* 0+1 Infrastructure Reclamation
How to "Brain Blast"
1. Go to the 'struct you want to work on. Rave it, then join it, if you haven't already.
2. Introduce yourself and your ideas by adding to the "Other Information" field. Which of your 2019 communities can help the superstruct, and how? What would you need from other SEHIs to help mobilise your communities?
3. Add a link in the "Superstructures we are collaborating with" field - have you seen any other 'structs that you think could help this one? If so, how?
Remember to sign and date your edits, and let us know what you've been getting up to. If we're looking to buy some more time on the ol' survival clock, you're going to have to keep nominating the best stuff for badges! (Here's an example of how this ought to look.)
We'll be keeping an eye on contributions, but don't hesitate to email us to draw our attention to your Brain-blasting effort. And keep nominating the best work of your fellow SEHIs for badges -- everyone's recognition benefits our collective bottom line!
Protovation badges will go to all SEHIs who successfully complete a Brain Blast within 72 hours of the publishing of this update!
Mobbability Mission: Find Hidden Connections
Which superstructures should be working together? To earn your Mobbability badge, find at least two superstructures that would be more powerful when combined. Start a discussion proposing an alliance, and ask your fellow SEHIs to find more superstructures to join you.
Ok kiddies....that should give you plenty to keep you busy until the wee hours of the morning. We've got a lot of work to do in the next few weeks...let's get cracking!
