Identity in the 21st century - a brave new world.

As people's sense of place and identity is increasingly stripped away, how does their sense of identity mutate - into mental illness, or strange new adaptive strategy? Identity based around net profile and MMORPG character? Multiple personality disorder as a creative lifestyle option? Who are we becoming? See my video for more info http://vimeo.com/1887280

Identity is often described as a narrative that tells us who we are. Why limit ourselves to a single story?

But can trust be established when too much is in motion? Can I rely on someone who changes their identity too readily? Can I make business contracts with them? Become too friendly if their personality may change? Fall in love?

In a world of exiles and Citadels, your personality is becoming your Guild. There is now only the ExeCities with wireless, and local enclaves that depend on internships, TechTrades, and old school apprenticeships. This is because you can\\\'t have a Walker come into your Enclave, the may be carrying the flu, or even EpsteinBarr, the cancer virus. They will have to stay in the Quarantine Quarter, till they show they are clean. Of course, this has the potential to spread infections in the Quarters, so there is a danger in even allowing them to camp and serf the fields as they pick a local Enclave and Exec. You are your useful skills, and the Guilds cover most of the accreditations and freestanding schools

People are talking about credentials and identity as though that matters. If you\\\'re not getting ready to have a brain surgeon tap into your skull during the next coupla minutes I wouldn\\\'t woory too much about it.

The problem seems to be that, in this thread, we haven't even nailed down what identity is. It's a very fluid concept that could literally just apply to your face/name/qualifications, or be a more subjective notion about your idea of the self, or even incorporate both of those along with the various social and cybernetic relationships you enter into (I wasn't born Prophessor Bedlam, you know). Like the language that accompanies it, identity might need to evolve as new influences become widespread. People may feel adrift, but that should serve to encourage them to establish an identity of their own. Alternately, it could enable them to more easily adopt a communal identity and work collectively with others. Why shouldn't you create the you that you'd like to be? - Prophessor Bedlam, Current Mood: Chartreuse

No matter how much people become limited by what they do and who they are with, one of the scariest things is that you are so scared, so scared to let anyone else know about who you are. Better to not have them know, and keep your personality at least as something that you can remember at night. During the day, your personality is merely how efficiently you do something, and how well you interact.
